Harbour seals live in salt water but visit the Falls to bask and fish during the period of high tide. Known as “sea dogs” because of their expressive, dog-like faces and barking cry, they belong to a group called phocids, or earless seals. Seals are warm-blooded mammals and breathe oxygen. Adult seals may weigh as much as 113 kg. (249 lbs.) and grow to a length of 1.5 metres (5 feet). They are excellent swimmers, capable of bursts of speed reaching 28 kph (17 mph) and are able to dive for as long as 15 minutes.
